CNMI garment factories ignore labour laws

3:33 pm on 11 April 2005

38 employers identified as not complying with labour laws in the Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas are garment factories.

A local newspaper, the Marianas Variety, says representatives of the 38 employers have been summoned by the Labor Department.

The director of the Department Division of Employment, Alfred Pangelinan, said there was a need for the stricter enforcement of laws and regulations that are already in place to maximize the use of workers in the CNMI.

Mr Pangelinan said the employers' compliance with the rules will help the CNMI's ailing economy.

Amended labor regulations require displaced resident and nonresident workers to register with the department for job placement and referrals.
