American Samoa Governor demand immediate resignation of auditor

10:14 am on 25 April 2005

American Samoa's Governor, Togiola Tulafono, has demanded the immediate resignation of the territory's auditor, George Webster.

The Governor informed Mr Webster of his decision by letter after a meeting between the two at the end of last week.

The letter informed Mr Webster that if he failed to resign and vacate his office, he would be served a termination letter and referred to the Fono for termination.

Under the law, the territorial auditor can only be removed from office by approval of the governor and a two thirds majority vote of both the House and Senate.

Mr Webster has been Territorial Auditor since August of 2003 and is into the second year of a four year contract.

He has declined to comment on the governor's action.
