A delegate to a Digital Radio symposium being held in Wellington this week, says the technology could have a positive impact on Solomon Islands.

Delegates from Britain, Asia and Australia have spent the last three days looking at digital technology which makes it possible to transmit over long distance and for the signal to arrive in FM quality.

The head of engineering at Solomon Islands Broadcasting Corporation, Cornelius Rataman, says radio is a lifeline, and is vital during the cyclone season.

"The recent cyclone we had which swept Tikopia Island, it was because of a little radio there that saved the people someone picked up the warning from SIBC, maybe with difficulty of course with the current technology, but that somebody managed to warn everybody else there was a cyclone coming they managed to save many people."
