A French navy expedition has formally identified the wreck off Vanikoro in Solomon Islands as belonging to the explorer Laperouse.

The Solomons Association of New Caledonia and the French navy launched an expedition last month to retrace Laperouse's final voyage in 1788.

Hundreds of objects retrieved from the wrecks led the team to identify the wreck as the remains of La Boussole, one of the explorer's two vessels.
