French Polynesia mayor asks for leaked nuclear test documents

12:27 pm on 20 May 2005

People in the Gambier archipelago in French Polynesia are asking officials in France to hand over files on the health impact of 30 years of nuclear weapons testing.

The Gambier mayor Monique Richeton and others on Mangareva atoll have asked the French defence ministry to give them access to the information.

The association of former workers on the test sites, Mururoa e Tatou, has obtained the reports which mention considerable radioactive fallout.

The French defence ministry has described as "baseless" allegations that the army knowingly exposed the people of French Polynesia to heightened risks during nuclear tests in the 1990s.
