Palau state governor charged with stealing government funds

A state governor in Palau is facing 175 criminal charges for allegedly stealing government funds.

The Palau Horizon reports that Ngiwal State Governor Elmis Mesubed has been charged with grand larceny, forgery, conspiracy, cheating, embezzlement and dozens of other offences.

It is alleged by the Office of the Special Prosecutor that Mr Mesubed diverted at least 25 thousand dollars of state funds for personal use, including the purchase of alcohol, over the past five years.

The allegations are that he used false building company invoices purportedly for building materials when the payments were for alchol and other beverages.
