Golkar wins seven constituencies in provisional Papua election results

4:05 pm on 1 July 2005

Provisional vote counts indicate that the Golkar Party appears to have secured wins in 13 regencies and municipalities in elections in the Indonesian province of Papua.

Head of the Jayapura City General Elections Commission, La Pona, said that the result of the election in the city's four districts would be confirmed in the next two days.

But the Jakarta Post reports that not everybody is happy with the election result.

The deputy chief of the Musa Youwe-Nur Alam campaign team, Joko Dasri, has claimed that the election was invalid since 60 percent of the nearly 200-thousand registered voters in Jayapura city didn't vote as they were not invited to do so by the Electoral Commission.

He says the election should be repeated if it is to be fair, and has threatened to bring the case to the Constitutional Court if his team's complaint is ignored.
