Papua New Guinea police on alert after student protest

1:11 pm on 12 July 2005

Armed police remain on alert at the University of Papua New Guinea in Port Moresby after students torched two cars and a motorcycle during a protest over its grading policy.

The protesters waited outside the administration block yesterday demanding a meeting with Vice-Chancellor Professor Leslie Eastcott to present him with a petition signed by 2-thousand students.

Students clashed with security and torched the vice-chancellor's car, another used by the Bursar and a university security motorcycle before armed police with dogs arrived to calm the situation.

City police commander, Assistant Police Commissioner Tony Wagambie, urged students to disperse peacefully after he escorted Professor Eastcott to receive the petition.

The protesting students have given the Vice-Chancellor until noon local time to respond to their grievances.

The protesters' main issue is over a tough, new grading policy but other grievances include the conversion of a chapel into a lecture room, a no-refund policy on student fees and substandard food.
