10:40 am on 9 September 2005

Dignitaries from all walks of life in Fiji are gathered in Nadi today for the funeral of the country's oldest citizen.

Bechu Prasad, who was born in May 1900 in Rakiraki, died peacefully at his home at Sabeto near Nadi this week aged 105.

The prime minister, Laisenia Qarase, will be among those delivering eulogies at a service before Mr Prasad is cremated.

Tributes to the exemplary personal qualities and public service displayed by Mr Prasad right till the end on Tuesday night have been pouring in from political party leaders and religious organisations.

Mr Prasad has been described as an inspiration to many and a national icon whose passing will result in Fiji losing an important link with its past.
