Fiji's military is to send another 189 troops for the protection of United Nations staff and installations in Iraq.

The Fiji Sun quotes the military commander, Commodore Bainimarama, as saying that 55 soldiers will fly to Erbil on their first deployment there on the 14th of next month.

134 troops will leave for Basra, which is controlled by British troops, a little later.

Commodore Bainimarama says accommodation for the Fiji troops in Erbil has been completed while construction in Basra is still under way.

The new commander of the Fiji troops in Iraq will be the former commander of land forces, Col Iowane Naivalurua.
