Vanuatu's opposition is confident it has the numbers to bring down the government, after lodging a notice for a motion of no-confidence yesterday.
The speaker of parliament, San Dan Avock, has confirmed he has received the notice and is to notify parliament that the motion is up for debate next Thursday.
The Prime Minister Ham Lini appears to have the support of 34 members, while the opposition's power base has swelled to 18 after the recent ousting of the Greens Confederation from the coalition government.
However, the opposition spokesman Kal Moli says with the overseas absence of the deputy Prime minister Sato Kilman and another MP, as well as the speaker's inability to vote, they're confident they have lured the extra numbers for a majority.
"Based on the confidentiality of the alliances that have been forged over the past few days, just to cater for the Motion of No-Confidence, it has been placed in the best interests of a smooth transition of the motion that we do not disclose who are to be the possible backers of the motion."
Meanwhile, Ham Lini is expected to hold a meeting this afternoon when he will ask members of his coalition to sign a solidarity pact.
