Solomon Islands NGO leader announces he will run for parliament next year

A Solomon Islands community leader says he will contest next year's election on a platform of making MPs accountable for their share of the rural constituency development fund.

The auditor-general has sounded alarm bells over the lack of accountability of how the money is spent.

Abraham Baenisia from the Solomon Islands Development Trust says he will stand as an independent in the seat held by former prime minister, Bartolomew Ulufa'alu.

"I'm not a member of any groups at the moment. I believe in being totally independent so I can choose whichever I believe is working in the way I believe."
