A major health clinic in Papua New Guinea's second largest city, Lae, has closed indefinitely.

The Post Courier newspaper reports the Buimo Health Centre, which served more than 30,000 people, shut its doors on Tuesday owing to a shortage of staff.

A reporter for the newspaper visited the hospital on Monday and found only two nurses working, with patients queuing up outside the clinic and others sitting around waiting for their turn to receive treatment.

One officer said the workload was such that one nurse was attending to more than 150 patients a day.
