8:05 am on 6 February 2006

A landslide near the Fiji town of Labasa following several days of heavy rain has killed a woman and her two young children.

They were 28-year old Nileshni Chand and her daughters Elvina Grace, 4, and Melvina Grace, 2.

Her husband, Arunesh Khelawan, was fighting for his life at Labasa Hospital last night.

His 70-year old mother, Ram Kali, escaped unharmed after the landslide moved over 45 metres and buried their house.

An excavator had to be used to remove the debris before the dead could be recovered.

In a seperate incident, the body of 40-year old man who was believed to have been trying to cross the Waiqele River was found floating in the water.

There has been heavy flooding elsewhere around Labasa over the weekend and hundreds of families have been forced to take shelter in evacuation centres.

The Nadi Weather Centre is predicting more rain today.
