The acting prime minister of Tonga, Dr Fred Sevele, is expected to be confirmed in his post some time this week.

He is the first popularly-elected MP to be appointed to the position which comes in the wake of the resignation of Prince 'Ulukalala Lavaka Ata on the weekend.

A member of the Human Rights and Democracy movement, Akilisi Pohiva, who's also a popularly-elected MP, is welcoming the move to have Dr Sevele lead the government.

Mr Pohiva says he's the best minister for the job.

And, he says it's good for the pro-democracy movement because Dr Sevele remains a member.

"I have a feeling, and I certainly hope, that he will continue to carry out the mission. That has been our plan in the past and now he's in the government, I think that he will continue to push for change."

Our correspondent in Tonga says Crown Prince Tupouto'a is expected to confirm the appointment of Dr Sevele as prime minister, later this week.
