Police in the Papua New Guinea city of Lae say there's been at least one reported case of rape every day this year.
The National newspaper reports that the police chief Simon Kauba is concerned that rape cases are on the rise.
Mr Kauba has urged young women not to walk around alone but if they do, to take every precaution to safeguard themselves.
He says girls were not taking police advice seriously.
The police chief's comments come after the gang rape of three teenagers in the city over the weekend.
In one of the incidents, a girl was walking home alone after a dance at 4am when she was raped by a group of men.
In the other incident, a girl, alone in a house, answered a knock on the door and was dragged out by two armed men and raped.
In a third incident, a young girl was held up at knife point at a bus stop and ordered into a bus.
