Solomons minister sacked over extramarital affair

9:29 am on 20 March 2006

The caretaker prime minister of Solomon Islands has sacked the caretaker infrastructure minister, Alfred Sasako, two weeks before the country has a general election.

According to a report by the Solomon Islands Broadcasting Corporation, Sir Allan Kemakeza took the action because Mr Sasako had been fined by the Leadership Code Commission for having an extramarital affair.

Sir Allan says the ruling has had adverse effects on the good name of the caretaker government.

The Prime Minister told Mr Sasako that the ruling has also distorted his political conduct and questioned his attitude as a minister.

Sir Allan says he is left with no options but to recommend to the Governor General to revoke Mr Sasako's appointment as Infrastructure and development minister.
