Vanuatu police reopen election office after protest

8:01 pm on 22 March 2006

Vanuatu police have re-opened the electoral office in the capital after a group of people from the island of Tanna used a chain to lock the premises.

They reportedly acted when the principal electoral officer refused to breach the law to register them to vote in urban Port Vila even though they live in the rural areas of Port Vila.

The staff at the office could only return to work when police cut the chain.

The acting commissioner of police, Arthur Caulton, says those who committed the offence will face arrest.
