More PNG leaders accused of misconduct in office

7:16 pm on 13 April 2006

The Public Prosecutor has found there is sufficient and credible evidence to prosecute Cabinet Minister Puka Temu and Deputy Opposition Leader Andrew Baing before a leadership tribunal.

The National newspaper reports Chronox Manek has requested Chief Justice Sir Mari Kapi to appoint an appropriate Leadership Tribunal to enquire into allegations of misconduct against the two MPs.

Mr Manek says the subject of the referral for Mr Baing related to alleged misappropriation of more than 83-thousand US dollars in district support grant funds in 2002.

He says the leader also failed to comply with Ombudsman Commission directions prohibiting further use of development funds from 2000 to 2002.

For Dr Temu, the subject of the referral relates to the leader failing to give his annual statements to the Ombudsman Commission when from 2000 to 2003.

The two MPs will be automatically suspended from office once the tribunal appointed by the Chief Justice begins hearing their cases.
