The New Zealand prime minister, Helen Clark, has criticised the appointment in Solomon Islands of two ministers being held in remand over last month's riots.
Miss Clark says she was aghast when she heard that Charles Dausabea and Nelson Ne'e were given ministerial posts.
Mr Dausabea has been made the minister of police.
Miss Clark says the two are charged with very serious offences.
The prime minister of Solomon Islands, Manasseh Sogavare, has defended his choice after being criticised by Australia.
Miss Clark says if the appointments stand, there will be very strong views expressed from New Zealand as they would have serious ramifications not only for Solomon Islands but also for the Solomon Islands' international reputation.
