The General Manager of Samoa's Kidney Foundation, Penny Matautia, says extra contributions will continue to be needed from the public to help run the renal dialysis unit because of the huge demand.
A fundraising drive has just collected more than 50 thousand US dollars.
Penny Matautia says it was always envisaged that the community would need to help with the financial support of the unit.
But she says the high use of the machines means they are wearing out quicker than expected and the waiting list is getting longer:
"We've had a very rapid growth in patient numbers, in the first fifteen months we've had over .400 per cent increase in growth. We also have 187 patients we've identified on our waiting list."
Penny Matautia says the unit is currently treating 30 patients
