Canned beef row between PNG and Fiji resolved

The Solomon Islands mediated trade impasse between Papua New Guinea and Fiji over PNG's export of canned beef to Fiji has been resolved.

The Solomon Islands Director of Trade, Hans Vaikesa, says the 5-year row was settled during the recent Melanesian Spearhead Group MSG meeting in Buala Solomon Islands.

Mr Vaikesa says the differences between the two countries stemmed from Fiji's quarantine laws blocking PNG's canned beef entering the Fiji market, despite the existence of the MSG Free Trade Agreement.

He says the technicalities of the Fiji Quarantine regulation needs to be sorted out, before PNG canned beef can be stocked in Fiji.
