Malaita man in Solomons court on firearms charges

10:18 am on 16 August 2006

In Solomon Islands, a Malaita man has appeared in court charged with possession of high powered weapons and ammunition.

The man will reappear in court in two weeks time.

Three years ago, the Australian led Regional Assistance Mission to Solomon Islands-RAMSI, arrived in the country to restore law and order and save the island nation from economic collapse.

Soon after its arrival in July 2003, RAMSI began collecting all arms and ammunition in the hands of former militants and destroyed them in public ceremonies to make it clear that the country would not be subjected to the rule of the gun.
