The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has recommended that an investigation be conducted in American Samoa to find out whether the Legislature building materials contain asbestos, a compound that can cause cancer and other diseases.
This followed a recent inspection of the Fono building by the Army Corps following a request from the Senate President for assistance in assessing the structural integrity of the current facility.
The Senate President Lolo Moliga says the Corps of Engineers inspector's preliminary findings have caused alarm and he has requested further checks of the material used.
Lolo said the inspector also recommended that the paint used for the interior of the structure be tested for lead content.
