Police have arrested and charged the Papua New Guinea police commissioner Sam Inguba with abuse of office and perverting the course of justice.

Mr Inguba is alleged to have blocked a police inquiry into an alleged fraud of 1.4 million US dollars in the Finance Department.

Mr Inguba has since been released on bail and he appeared in court, denying all charges.

The National newspaper reports that Mr Inguba had instructed his lawyers to sue for 3.5 million US dollars in damages for defamation.
