Former Lord Mayor in Fiji has case to answer on tax evasion

6:31 am on 29 September 2006

The Suva magistrate's court has ruled that a former lord mayor of Fiji's capital and prominent businessman, has a case to answer on ten charges of tax evasion amounting to more than 300-thousand US dollars

Magistrate Ajmal Khan gave the ruling when

Dhansukh Lal Bhika's Australian lawyer, John Turner QC, submitted that the charges had not been proven beyond reasonable doubt and there was no case to answer.

Bhika chose not to give sworn evidence and could not be cross-examined.

Magistrate Khan said he had considered all the evidence and found that the prosecution had covered all essential ingredients of the offence to make a prima facie case of tax evasion.

Mr Khan will deliver judgment on October the 16th.
