Samoa police have released a man who last week began a 15-month prison sentence for negligent driving causing death.

The prisoner was let go after his family paid a 500 US dollar fine for his other charge of negligent driving causing injuries.

According to a police officer at Tafa'igata prison, the inmate was released after they were advised that the fine had been paid.

But a senior police officer who does not want to be named says police could face contempt of court if the inmate cannot be put back into jail to serve his fifteen months.
