An American Samoa police officer, captain Malo Te'o, has been charged with tampering with evidence over allegations that guards at the Juvenile Detention Facility had been having sex with inmates.

The Samoa News reports that Captain Te'o, had been officer in charge at the facility when the alleged sex acts were taking place.

The charges follow claims that he brushed aside the concerns of four police officers who first alerted him that two of his staff were allegedly having sex with the facility's inmates.

Despite the allegations the two accused men continued to work at the facility until removed last month by the warden.
