Solomon Islands plans to extend government services to villagers

There is to be higher priority placed on ensuring government services in Solomon Islands are reaching people in villages.

The secretary to cabinet, Dr John Roughan, says this is one of the issues identified in a third meeting of a series being held between officials and members of the Regional Assistance Mission, RAMSI.

He says the government is to set aside 10 percent of monies it collects to enable churches and NGOs to reach villagers in a number of programmes they undertake.

Basic food security is also a priority with Dr Roughan saying too much money is being spent on importing rice when it can be grown.

The cabinet secretary says a third priority is ensuring a restorative justice programmes is extended along with the court system to reach people in villages.

"Some of the courts are there but they haven't been touring, for instance, and that's sometimes very hard, not so much court buildings as proceedings. There are some things, especially land cases, that have to be adjudicated and this has to be strengthened so people see that there is a time frame to it, a shortened time frame that we've been used to in the last few years."

Dr Roughan says the implementation of the schemes depends on the budget which is currently being discussed in caucus.
