Tongan military gets US hardware for supporting fight on terrorism

3:52 pm on 19 December 2006

The Tongan military has been given about a million US dollars worth of weapons and equipment by the United States army.

Radio Tonga says the shipment was flown in on a Hercules at the weekend.

The radio quotes Lieutenant Colonel Patric Reardon as saying the shipment was long overdue.

It is seen as a mark of appreciation by the US for the help Tonga has provided in the fight against terrorism, and follows Tonga sending troops to Iraq in 2004.

Tonga and Solomons Islands joined Australia in the US-led so-called coalition of the willing to invade Iraq.
