No court circuit results in jail jam in PNG province

The Police Commander in Papua new Guinea's Sandaun province says the lack of a National Court circuit since March has resulted in remandees over crowding the Vanimo prison.

The National newspaper quotes Chief Inspector Richard Mulou as saying there is now a backlog of cases pending and Richard Koronai, who is the only magistrate on the ground, is overworked.

To add more problems, there are reports that Mr Koronai will be transferred out to another province.

Mr Mulou says that a lot of serious crimes like murder and rape cases are still pending of which Mr Koronai, who handles summary offences, could effectively deal with them.

The Police Commander says there is a need for a National Court circuit so that a judge will come here to release the burden that is been faced by Mr Koronai.

Mr Mulou said police were doing their part in arresting and charging suspects.

Meanwhile, he says they have also heard that remandees are planning to break out, and that will be another burden as police funds can only cater for the festive operations.
