Solomon's opposition wants thorough investgation into alleged assassination plot

11:10 am on 5 February 2007

The Solomon Islands Opposition has called on police to thoroughly investigate the alleged plot to assassinate the Prime Minister, Manasseh Sogavare.

Opposition leader, Fred Fono, says those involved in the alleged plot must be apprehended and face the full force of the law.

He says Solomon Islands must not allow people who plan to harm national leaders to go unpunished.

But Mr Fono says police investigators must also find out whether or not there was indeed a plot to kill Mr Sogavare.

He says it is to be hoped the reported plot was not an attempt to build up government support for its plan to rearm the police, nor was it an attempt by the government to boost support for its leadership.
