11:47 am on 12 February 2007

Flood waters are rising in and around Fiji's western city of Lautoka and in the Nadi and Sigatoka areas following continuous heavy rain overnight.

The Nadi Weather Office says torrential rain is expected to continue during the day and there is danger of flash flooding in the Navua, Suva, Nausori and Tailevu areas.

Many roads and bridges in and around Lautoka and Nadi are under water and closed to traffic.

Villagers and low-lying settlements are reported to be flooded and people have been advised to move to higher ground.

Disaster authorities are preparing to open evacuation centres if the need arises.

Most schools did not open today for the beginning of the new week and many people have been unable to go to work.

Heavy rain is also falling on the second island of Vanua Levu parts of which were hit by flooding only a week ago and people have been advised to take precautions.
