Solomons Chief Justice says slur on judiciary unwarranted

7:42 pm on 9 March 2007

The Solomon Islands Chief Justice says it is regrettable that the media had cast an unwarranted slur on the country's justice system.

Sir Albert Palmer made the comment while welcoming a local judge, Justice Rex Foukona, to the bench.

Justice Sir Palmer said that the issue of delays in the hearing of trials and delivery of judgements in

the High Court was an issue he and other judges were not happy with.

He said judges had worked extremely hard, despite the difficulties and sometimes harsh criticisms levelled at the court.

The Chief Justice was referring to the media's recent coverage over detention camps for terrorists in 'Guantanamo Bay'.

He says that while a free press is important to a democracy, the media has a responsibiliy to the people.
