Fiji interim administration says no diplomatic mission will be closed or expelled

Fiji's interim administration has held its first briefing for Suva-based diplomats to inform them of the progress made since it took office.

Fiji TV says the diplomats were also told that Fiji does not want to get into any more arguments with the international community and there is no way any diplomatic mission would be expelled.

The briefing was carried out by the permanent secretary for foreign affairs, Ross Ligairi, and his counterpart in the Prime Minister's Office, Pramesh Chand.

Mr Chand says the diplomats were briefed on what the interim government is doing to move the country forward and why it is doing what it is doing.

He says if countries are genuine about engaging with Fiji, they should discuss issues with the administration rather than making general statements through the media without realizing how much progress has already been made.

He has given an assurance that despite recent verbal skirmishes, no diplomatic mission would ever be asked to leave the country.

But Mr Chand stressed that Fiji is a sovereign nation and has the right to decide its own future.

He says the interim administration will continue such briefings and regular dialogue with the international community.
