PNG traffic hit by campaigning

3:41 pm on 8 May 2007

Hundreds of commuters in Port Moresby were left stranded yesterday as well known candidates in Papua New Guinea's upcoming elections hired out most of the buses.

The Post Courier newspaper said the vehicles were used to transport supporters as the candidates submitted their nominations to stand.

Parts of the National Capital were brought to a standstill as the public transport system was disrupted and turned into a show of political power.

Travel disruption is expected for the rest of this week as local candidates continue to use the buses for their political entourage.
