Scientists from throughout the United States and Pacific are meeting in Honolulu this week to discuss fishery management issues in the US Pacific territories.

The scientists make up the Committee of the Western Pacific Regional Fishery Management Council, and will look at key issues including what measures to implement after the Hawaiian Islands bottom fish closure for seven species of deepwater species, in September.

It will also look at changing the existing 50 mile longline closed area around Guam.

They will also discuss establishing a mechanism by which tuna quotas issued by Pacific regional fishery management organizations can be implemented by the Council through the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act, which governs the conservation and management of ocean fishing.
