The police in the Cook Islands says it plans to lay criminal charges against a 19-year-old man over an alleged shooting incident on the island of Pukapuka.

Three people were injured in the incident more than a week ago and were later transported to the main island of Rarotonga for treatment in hospital.

Detective senior sergeant, Solomona Tuati of the crimes investigation unit, says police have requested that the man be transferred to Rarotonga.

He says police on Rarotonga are now waiting on the officer in Pukapuka.

"What's happening in Pukapuka now is the police officer that is investigating the incident has almost completed his investigations and charges will follow."
