French Polynesia's Tahoeraa claims defamation by Tong Sang

French Polynesia's Tahoeraa Huiraatira Party says it has lodged a defamation claim against a former president, Gaston Tong Sang.

This comes amid continued acrimony between the party and Mr Tong Sang who was ousted from power by his party colleagues and who is now set to launch his own party.

The Tahoeraa is now reacting to his claims that Tahoeraa members have contacted his supporters to lodge a new no confidence motion.

The claim prompted the ruling Union For Democracy to issue a statement to say there is no truth in it.

The Union For Democracy said the rumours were aimed at giving an air of political instability to justify a shortening of the term of the current assembly.

The Tahoeraa says it is against the election campaign to be launched with lies and propaganda.

France is set to call early elections to be held in January although the biggest two parties in Tahiti now oppose going to the polls.
