Air Rarotonga airfare increase won't make much of an impact

The general manager of Air Rarotonga in the Cook Island, Ewan Smith, is confident the new airfares to the northern islands won't have too much impact on travellers.

Air Raro has increased the fares by 69-percent raising them from 880 dollars US dollars one way to 1,500 dollars.

Mr Smith says they had no choice because of the increase in operation costs to the northern group.

He says there are three categories of travellers which include government officials, as well as regional organisations.

"I don't think it will affect them, there are business travellers that travel there in support of or who're involved in the pearl industry, it will affect them a bit, but I think that business travel nevertheless will be seen by many as essential, probably the traveller that's affected the most is really the general public who will be travelling for private reasons."

Mr Smith says however, that the private traveller also has the choice of going by sea.
