Police in Samoa charge suspended assistant police commissioner

4:38 pm on 21 November 2007

A Samoa assistant police commissioner, who is currently suspended, is facing five criminal charges, including three of indecent assault.

It has taken the police commissioner, Papalii Lorenese Neru, two months to decide to lay charges after the Attorney General, Aumua Ming Leung Wai, had recommended it be done.

An initial hearing today has been adjourned to next week without a plea for the state to finalise the charges.

The charges come after two policewomen filed complaints alleging the assistant commissioner had attempted to rape them on two separate occasions last May.

The defendant has name suppression in the interim.
