Solomon Islands government to challenge GG in High Court over Parliament sitting

12:34 pm on 24 November 2007

The Solomon Islands Government says it will be challenging the declaration of the date for the resumption of the next Parliament session by the Governor General, Sir Nathaniel Waena.

The Governor General said yesterday that Parliament will next sit on December 13 and that he had already discussed it with the government.

However, the Prime Minister, Manasseh Sogavare, says this was done without his advice or Cabinet's, and the government will now lodge a challenge in the High Court.

Mr Sogavare says under the Solomon Islands National Constitution, the Governor General could only proclaim the date for the reconvening of Parliament at the advise of the Prime Minister or the Cabinet.

He says Cabinet will meet tomorrow to decide on the date for the next Parliament sitting.

He said the delay in reconvening parliament on November 15, as initially planned was necessary to allow the Minister of Finance and Treasury, Francis Zama to be briefed on the government budget for next year before it will be tabled in the next sitting of the House.
