New push to reduce obesity among American Samoans

11:28 am on 21 January 2008

A United States government official is asking American Samoan government and community leaders to implement a plan that would lead to healthier living in the territory.

Dr. Saleia Afele-Faamuli, who oversees national science and education programmes for the United States Department of Agriculture.has been in American Samoa for nearly two weeks, attending meetings and promoting the plan with various government leaders.

"If you look at the statistics it shows that most of the deaths in American Samoa are related to obesity and obesity-related diseases. So we have to do something, and this programme, or intervention, is proposing that we exercise regularly or do physical activity and eat healthily."

Dr. Afele-Faamuli says there is enough scientific data to show that Samoans are among the most obese peoples in the world.
