Transparency Solomon Islands has welcomed the move of its new prime minister to seek an improvement in diplomatic relations with its neighbours.

The new Solomons Islands prime minister, Derek Sikua, met his Australian counterpart, Kevin Rudd, on Wednesday.

The two countries are seeking to improve ties that were strained under the former Solomon Islands prime minister's rule.

The two leaders discussed a range of matters, including the Australian-led regional assistance mission to the Solomons.

The organisation's chair, Bob Pollard, says it's a good move.

"It's an excellent initiative that he's taking. It's certain that our former prime minister had brought our country's relationship with its neighbours to a significant low and it's important Dr Sikua quickly attend to this and it's important because we're a small island state and we definitely depend on good relations with our neighbours."

Derek Sikua has met with the Papua New Guinean prime minister earlier to discuss the relationship between the two countries.
