The European Union has earmarked 25 million US dollars for development funding in the French Pacific territory of Wallis and Futuna, over the next five years.

The money is under the 10th European Development Fund.

A visiting EU envoy, Sven Kühn von Burgsdorff, says it could go towards education, health, renewable energy, natural resource management and sustainable development.

Under the previous round more than nine million US dollars had been set aside for a harbour for fishing boats in Halalo harbour, but work which was due to begin in 2006 is yet to get underway.

Mr Von Burgsdorff put the delay down to local management issues and communication problems with the EU headquarters.

But he says those funds would not be lost and could be re-engaged shortly.
