Solomon Islands approaching Taiwan to help ensure it can provide free education

6:16 pm on 7 March 2008

The Solomon Islands Acting Prime Minister, says the Government is in continuing talks with Taiwan in order to ensure free education.

Fred Fono says free education for Solomon Islands is a policy all members of Parliament agree with, both in Opposition and the Government.

He says if the country aspires to an educated society, there must be free education..

However, he says the Government has to secure funding from the country's development partners and that is one of the issues under discussion between Taipeh and Honiara..

There is already considerable support for education from the EU and New Zealand.
