French Polynesian economy struggles to create sufficient jobs

An official French report for 2007 says the economy in French Polynesia has failed to create enough jobs for a growing population.

The findings by the IEOM institute show that last year just under 1,600 jobs were created while the labour force grew by 2,500.

The report says imports grew while exports fell to create an imbalance of 1.9 billion US dollars.

It also found that tourism dropped by 1.5 percent, which is in part attributed to the fall in the value of the US dollar.
