The head of French Polynesia'a new outer island assembly group says if the opposition grows to 29 members it will try to oust the government of Gaston Flosse formed in February.
Teina Maraeura has attracted five assembly members to set up Te Mana o te mau which he says remains linked to the To Tatou Aia opposition coalition.
He says he has been in talks with Michel Yip of the ruling coalition in a bid to see if he wants to join the group.
This would give the opposition the support 28 out of the assembly's 57 members.
Mr Maraeura explained his move to set up a separate group by saying the outer islands members are not properly valued and none of them is in government.
The To Tatou Aia coalition is the French Polynesian partner of France's ruling UMP Party.
The UMP severed all ties with Mr Flosse's party in February after he failed to meet the French government's suggestion to form a coalition with To Tatou Aia.
