Fiji Labour Party president says flaws in electoral system must be fixed

The Fiji Labour Party president, Jokapeci Koroi, says flaws in the electoral system must be fixed even if it costs the party the 2009 election.

The FLP says it supports the move to do away with the Communal Seats, which reserves 46 of the 71 seats in the Lower House of Representatives for different ethnic groups.

Mrs Koroi says Labour also wants the electoral boundaries realigned so there is proportionate representation.

In the current system, some provinces with relatively small populations had similar number of members in the dissolved parliament as the larger provinces.
