Nauru gets US support in fighting finance crimes

The Nauru Government says it has received the backing of the United States Treasury's Financial Crimes Enforcement Network, or FinCEN, for reforms put in place to prevent money laundering.

This week FinCEN has withdrawn two compliance conditions, a move which recognises the Nauru government's determination to close gaps that might be exploited by money launderers.

Nauru's Minister for Justice, Mathew Batsiua, says it is another significant indicator that the country is on track as it works to stabilise its financial situation and boost economic potential.

He says the country's resumption of phosphate mining, combined with coral rock processing and exporting operations are putting Nauru on a much stronger footing.
